In March 2009, Red Rock Pastors Paul and Andrew Reichart traveled with Compassion International (CI) to Lima, Peru. During their week-long trip, Paul and Andrew visited CI’s national office, as well as five Compassion projects. They saw the effectiveness of CI’s model, witnessing how they come alongside local churches to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name. They witnessed life change!

We believe the more specifically we focus, the stronger impact we have. Therefore, at this stage in the life of our church, we will partner with CI in the town of Huancayo, Peru. Huancayo is a six hour bus ride from Lima over a 16,000 foot pass. Even though it is a beautiful area at 11,400 feet elevation, Huancayo has its share of poverty and need. 

In March 2009, Red Rock devoted an entire worship service to CI. We challenged people to consider the idea that God has blessed us so that we can be a blessing to others. We shared how CI is an integrity-filled organization with an effective model that is accomplishing its mission. We challenged individuals and couples to sponsor a child in Huancayo. Based on the size of Red Rock, CI told us that 25 children would be a respectable number sponsored. Red Rockers stepped up and sponsored over 75 children! This has been an amazing start to our international missions effort. 

Our desire is to sponsor more children in Huancayo through CI. We also plan to support CI projects and local churches in Peru by visiting them and participating in projects that will help them in their current situation. We are  planning a trip for the first week of July, 2010. CI will lead and organize the trip. We are encouraging people to sponsor a child in Huancayo before they participate in a missions trip to Peru.

As helpful as it is to sponsor a child for $32 a month, it is also very important to correspond with the sponsored child through letters. During their trip to Peru, Paul and Andrew heard first-hand from them how much the correspondence and encouragement from their sponsor helped them stay on track.
